US banks announce UK expansion projects hours after budget

JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs reveal plans for London and Birmingham as the sector is spared tax rises Two of Wall Street’s biggest banks have announced substantial expansion plans in the UK, hours after they were spared increased taxes in Rachel Reeves’s autumn budget. JP Morgan on Thursday revealed plans to build a 3m sq ft tower in Canary Wharf, which will serve as its new UK headquarters and house more than half of its 23,000 UK staff. It is understood that the London project will cost £3bn. The US rival  Goldman Sachs  said it would expand its Birmingham office and hire 500 staff, in a move that would more than double its workforce in the city. Banks dodged a tax raid in the chancellor’s budget, having lobbied hard against a higher levy that lenders argued could force them to curb lending and  cancel out the benefits of regulatory reforms  meant to spur growth. Reports emerged this week that the Treasury had asked the sector to issue supportive statements a...

Farage's racism denials are dishonest, says ex-classmate

A Jewish former classmate of Nigel Farage has told the BBC the Reform UK leader is being "fundamentally dishonest" by suggesting former pupils who say they witnessed his racism are not telling the truth. Peter Ettedgui said Farage, now aged 61, had repeatedly told him "Hitler was right" and "gas them" when they were teenagers at Dulwich College, in London. On Monday, Farage said he had "never directly racially abused anybody" after claims by former Dulwich College pupils, including Mr Ettedgui, that were  first reported in The Guardian , external . Mr Ettedgui said Farage's claim that those making allegations about his past behaviour were not telling the truth had left him "really angry". The BBC has spoken to two former Dulwich College pupils who have backed up Mr Ettedgui's version of events. In response to Mr Ettedgui's claims to the BBC, Farage told GB News, "I categorically deny saying those things, to that one ind...

Are we going to have a white Christmas this year?

Image
As the nights draw in and festive lights are getting strung up, some of us might start to hope - or dream - of seeing some Christmas snowfall. Christmas cards often depict scenes blanketed in snow. While this is a rare sight in much of the UK, a 'white Christmas' is more common than you might think. More than half of all Christmas Days in the UK have seen snow falling somewhere. So, although the odds are technically stacked in favour of a white Christmas, the detailed festive forecast for this year won't be confirmed for a while yet. At this early stage, what do we actually know about the chances of this Christmas being 'white'? What defines a 'white Christmas'? For a Christmas to be officially considered 'white', the snow doesn't need to be 'deep and crisp and even.' In fact, just a single snowflake has to be recorded falling at any point during the 24 hours of 25 December at any of the Met Office's network of around 300 observing st...

The UK had its coldest night of the autumn so far, as temperatures fell as low as -12.6C overnight in Scotland - the lowest temperature recorded on a November night in 15 years. The mercury fell to -7.2C in Wales, -6C in Northern Ireland and -6.7C in England on what was also the coldest night for the UK as a whole since 11 January. Cold health alerts have been issued for England, meaning there could be "significant impacts" to the elderly and people with health conditions, while a yellow ice warning is in place in the north-east of England. It comes on the last day of a cold snap, which brought widespread disruption and several inches of snow to parts of the country this week. In England, amber cold-health alerts have been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) until 08:00 GMT on Saturday for the North West, North East, and Yorkshire and Humber, with all other areas under less severe yellow alerts. The alerts warn of risks to vulnerable members of the community and...
